Two major railroads once served Richland! The Pennsylvania Railroad’s (West Jersey and Seashore Railroad) high-speed electrified line between Camden and Atlantic City (via Newfield) and the Reading Company’s (Atlantic City Railroad) steel speedway between Winslow Junction and Cape May City (via Tuckahoe). By 1894, these famous railroads connected this rural farming community to the rest of the nation…and the world! In June of 1933, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Reading Company merged their southern New Jersey operations to form the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.
Local Passenger service to Richland ended on September 28, 1935, and the last time a regularly-scheduled passenger train passed through Richland was on October 2, 1981. It has been all freight trains until October 8, 2005 when the Cape May Seashore Lines returned with excursion service. Click here for directions.
