Richland Village in Buena Vista Township is located in the center of Southern New Jersey. Our community has 8,000 people within 42 square miles of farms, forests, culture and history. Richland is actually designated as a “Village” in the Pinelands National Reserve and is located along US Route 40, also known as Harding Highway, named in honor of President Warren G. Harding in 1925 as part of the Federal Highway System. Richland was largely developed by the Richland Improvement Company in 1888.Two major railroads once served Richland! The Pennsylvania Railroad’s (West Jersey and Seashore Railroad) high-speed electrified line between Camden and Atlantic City (via Newfield) and the Reading Company’s (Atlantic City Railroad) steel speedway between Winslow Junction and Cape May City (via Tuckahoe). By 1894, these famous railroads connected this rural farming community to the rest of the nation…and the world! In June of 1933, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Reading Company merged their southern New Jersey operations to form the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.
Local Passenger service to Richland ended on September 28, 1935, and the last time a regularly-scheduled passenger train passed through Richland was on October 2, 1981. It has been all freight trains until October 8, 2005 when the Cape May Seashore Lines returned with excursion service. Click here for directions.
